Brief Summary of the Laws of Cricket

The Laws of the game of Cricket are the code that specifies the rules of the game of cricket across the globe. In the beginning, the code was established in the year 1744, and the since the year 1788 it has been maintained by its caretaker Marylebone Cricket Club in England. The current governing body for Cricket all across the globe is the International Cricket Council but earlier the major Governing body for cricket was the Marylebone Cricket Club which is a private club. Cricket is out of a few sports in which the rules and regulations of the game are called by the Laws in which L is capital.

The Regulations of the game of Cricket today

  • Law or Rule 1: A cricket team comprised of 11 players on each side can agree to play more than 11 players but only eleven players will be on the ground and not more than that.
  • Law or Rule 2: There are a total of three umpires out of which 2 are on the field and the remaining one is known as the third umpire who takes decisions when the two umpires on the field are not able to give the decision with the help of technology and the on-field umpires major job is also to give a decision and check if the game is played fairly.
  • Law or Rule 3: The number of scorers in a match is 2 who count the scores on the decision of the umpire.
  • Law of Rule 4: The length of the cricket ball is between 22.4 centimeters to 22.9 centimeters and its weight is 155.9 grams to 163 grams. And these specifications are different for women’s cricket and junior cricket.
  • Law of Rule 5: The size of the cricket bat should not exceed 38 inches and its width should not exceed 4.25 inches. The depth of the bat in the middle should not exceed 2.64 inches. It is also stated that the bat must be made of wood and not any metal or something.
  • Law or Rule 6: The cricket pitch is 22 yards in length and the pitch is 10 feet wide.
  • Law or Rule 7: The Law has established the location and the dimensions of the crease. The stumps are at the middle of each end of the pitch. The bowling crease must be 2.64 meters or 8 feet and 8 inches. The popping crease should not exceed 1.22 meters or 4 feet.
  • Law or Rule 8: The wicket comprises three stumps at each end of the crease three at the batting end and three at the bowling end. The length of the stump should not exceed 28 inches or 31.12 centimeters.
  • Law or Rule 9: A ball bowled bounces off the pitch and it may go in any direction left right or straight so, the pitch is rolled maintained, etc. and these all are done by the pitch curator.
  • Law or Rule 10: The pitch must be covered to protect it from rain and dew when the captains of both the teams agree to do so and the area from where the bowler comes running should be kept dry so that the bowler doesn’t slip while bowling and hurt himself. The pitch should be dry and if it is wet it affects the bounce of the ball and the ground also must be dry so that no player gets hurt.
  • Law or Rule 11: The play after the break starts when the umpire says ‘play’ and stops when the umpire says ‘time’ and the last our play must be of 20 overs and if these overs are not bowled during one hour then the time is also extended.
